How would you describe the location of your property?
We are based in a semi-rural part of Essex, in an area that feels wonderfully secluded despite being in an urban setting. The house is flanked by beautiful oak and silver birch trees, which give it a distinctly rural feel. It’s the perfect balance - close to everything, yet peaceful and green.
Tell us a little bit about your property and project?
The previous owner had lived in the house since it was built in the 1970s, which we really loved. It had clearly been a very happy family home. While it was beautifully maintained, it was ready for a new chapter, and we were excited to make it our own and bring it up to date for modern family life. We undertook a full renovation with a double-storey extension and a single-storey rear extension, essentially stripping it back and starting again.
When did your project start and how long has it taken?
We bought the house in October 2023. Our middle child had just turned one on the very day we moved in, which made it feel like the start of a whole new chapter! We spent a year working through plans and securing planning permission, and the build began in October 2024. We finally moved back in July 2025, so all in all it has been a thoughtful two-year journey from purchase to completion.
What styles did you want to see in your renovation?
For me, it was about balancing functionality, quality and character whilst creating a space that felt considered and timeless. I also wanted there to be a warmth and brightness to the kitchen.
How did you find us?
I discovered the Harrogate showroom whilst away for a weekend in North Yorkshire and completely fell in love with the brand. As soon as I returned home, I took my husband to the Essex showroom, and we both instantly knew Dorchester Aged White was the one.
Why did you choose Quorn Stone for your tiles?
The quality and character of the tiles immediately stood out to me. There is a softness and authenticity to them that you just don’t see everywhere. They feel timeless rather than trend-led, which was incredibly important for us in a forever home.
Why in particular did you choose the Dorchester Aged White porcelain?
Because the house is north-facing, I knew we needed materials that would bring warmth and depth to the interiors. The Dorchester Aged White Stone Effect Porcelain has the most beautiful warm undertones that really come alive when the sunlight hits it. The tiles perfectly complement the dark-stained oak island and the Little Greene Slaked Lime walls, adding subtle contrast while keeping the palette neutral and cohesive.
What is your favourite interior piece and why?
It has to be our oak kitchen island. I always envisioned it as the centrepiece of our open-plan living space - somewhere the children gather, where friends lean with a glass of wine, and where everyday life happens. The tiles frame it beautifully and really allow it to shine.
Where do you like to shop for interior pieces?
Oka is a favourite for timeless investment pieces. Their stools for our oak island were a must-have and really elevate the space. Some of my favourite pieces are also from smaller, less well-known brands too - such as Chosen By Jessica for statement lamps and vases that add personality.
What three words would you use to summarise your style?
Timeless. Elegant. Warm.
Are you planning on any future projects?
For now, we’re enjoying living in the finished space, but I’m already helping my brother with his renovation, and he’s actually chosen the same tiles after seeing ours!
