Step Inside

Step Inside Suzannes’ Former School House Kitchen

By Isabel Fernandez

June 25, 2026

Nestled in a small Staffordshire village just a few miles from Lichfield, Suzanne’s Grade II listed former schoolhouse is steeped in over 400 years of history. Once part of a working farm and later a small school, the property retains incredible character, from its beams to original doors. The recent kitchen renovation, featuring Bayonne Light Tumbled Effect Porcelain tiles, honours the home’s past while creating a practical and welcoming space for modern living.

What is the history of your property?

Our home is a grade II listed building and at least 400 years old. It has been used as a small school in the past, with farming land used at some point.

When did your project start and how long has it taken?

We started the renovation on 22nd Feb and had completed the project by mid-July.

What styles did you want to see in your renovation?

The kitchen had a stud wall at the back with a small corridor behind it that was unused. The idea was to take down the stud wall and use the space as part of the kitchen. We wanted a more modern look, but it was important with the age of the property to maintain features where we could. Beams and doors had already been painted. Some we stripped back and some we left. We re-fitted the original windows that we found in the cellar.

Why did you choose the Bayonne Light Rustique tiles?

We fitted underfloor heating which meant the thinner porcelain tiles would work better. The colour works well for muddy dog paws and the tumbled effect edge felt in keeping with the age and rustic nature of the property. We chose to use porcelain tiles for durability and ease of cleaning.

Why did you choose Quorn Stone for your tiles?

The showroom in Solihull had lots of good samples laid out, helpful sales team and gave us plenty of time to look.

What was the most difficult part of your renovation process?

The plumbing and electrics were complicated, but the flooring took the longest. Trying to level the floor, including the utility room, with different level steps, curved walls etc involved so many different people.

What was the best bargain find during your project?

The man who laid the floor tiles. He was a last minute find through a friend and was able to do a great job, within our time frame (2 weeks) for the right price.
