Kitchen Splashback Tile Ideas

When renovating, extending or building a whole new kitchen space, there are many aspects to consider and plenty of decision making. Whether you’ve already chosen your kitchen cabinets, stone flooring and paint colours or are just beginning your project by gathering inspiration - what kitchen backsplash or splashback you choose is a small part of the room but helps tie everything together! Our style guide on kitchen tiles provides you with plenty of kitchen splashback tile ideas that will achieve a practical yet beautiful finished look.

Gloss Metro Wall Tiles

A popular option for kitchen splashbacks has to be the gloss metro tiles! The classic metro wall tile has been around for many years - offering a sleek look and widely available in different colours and sizes. We love gloss metro kitchen tiles for their ability to work in a whole host of kitchen styles whether its an antiqued gloss country kitchen tile or contemporary gloss splashback. The Primrose Smoke metro tile is a top choice alongside the Zellige Natural gloss metro tile.

Monochrome Printed Kitchen Wall Tiles

Whilst a stone kitchen floor tends to be more neutral and simpler, a cooker tile surround or sink splashback is the perfect opportunity to have a bit of fun with print and pattern! Square monochrome printed kitchen wall tiles are a great way to incorporate pattern yet are versatile and muted in colour to go with almost any kitchen design. The Gigi and Emile are lovely decorative ceramic tiles in a 200x200mm size – an ideal small format for a kitchen backsplash.

Polished Marble Effect Metro Tiles

Most kitchen wall tiles out there are commonly ceramic or porcelain as they are much more hardwearing, practical, and resistant to staining than real marble. One of the kitchen backsplash trends for 2023 is polished marble effect metro tiles that look like real stone. White Carrara marble is a stone that has been used for centuries, sourced from Italy. Our Carrara marble effect metro tiles are also Italian and offer an extremely realistic glossy print and surface with grey veining for a polished finished look.

Patterned Square Splashback Tiles

Channelling inspirational kitchen tile trends, square patterned ceramic tiles are a lovely choice! Available in various prints and soft pale shades, square decorative tiles can add a little bit of colour and pattern to your kitchen space. The Sevilla patterned ceramic can be used on the floor or as wall backsplash tiles and has an authentic feel with its white, blue and beige tones emulating a true Spanish country patterned tile. The Ophelia patterned ceramic tiles are also a very pretty and timeless backsplash kitchen tile with options of soft white, sage green, pale blue or ebony – seen below is the Ophelia Sage.

Antique Metro Backsplash Tiles

For those wanting a metro backsplash tile with an antique or aged look, the Hockley Antiqued metro collection ticks all the boxes! In a thin 60x250mm metro tile, glossy finish, and shades of white, pink, greens and blues, these antiqued kitchen backsplash tiles will add a unique charm and beauty for both country and contemporary kitchens – they even have a matching trim available to finish off the edges of the wall tiles. The Hockley Antiqued Rose is a beautiful dusty pink adding a pop of colour to the kitchen, whilst the Hockley Antiqued White or Hockley Antiqued Grey are a fail-safe neutral kitchen splashback tile.

 Wood Look Wall Planks

If you are creating an industrial rustic feel to your kitchen space, some excellent backsplash trends for a kitchen wall tile are wood look planks or wood effect tiles. Usually porcelain or ceramic, wood effect planks offer a realistic mimic of real wood but with the hardwearing benefits of porcelain. The ‘Eaton’ collection of wood look planks is perfect for walls - being a thin 400 x 80mm tile in the popular herringbone and chevron formats. The Eaton Birch is a lovely pale wash wood, whereas the Eaton Ebony offers a richer, dark charcoal tone. Both featuring authentic knot details and variation between each plank – offering the best wood look splashback tile.

 Green Splashback Kitchen Tiles

Whether it’s a moody rich green antiqued metro or soft sage patterned ceramics tiles, green is a classic heritage colour that seems to be returning as a strong kitchen wall tile trend, alongside its use across the home. The beauty of green backsplash tiles is that they instantly create a little pop of colours, whilst also being versatile. For a country cottage kitchen wall tile, try the Orkney Green which has a lovely satin finish with natural edges and soft green tones. Those wanting a polished and sleeker look will love the Zellige Green – a high gloss metro tile in a rich green. The Hockley Antiqued Sage is perfect for contemporary or industrial kitchens with a true antique effect and varying shades of mid to dark sage.

Moving away from classic metro tiles, square green patterned kitchen tiles are another lovely way to incorporate the colour. The collection of green patterned wall tiles are muted in tone with beautiful designs. The Penrose Sage is a pale sage green with delicate patterns imitating flower petals when pieced together. A nod to authentic Spanish patterned tiles, the Positano ceramic tile has a traditional style of design with rustic green, white and warm shades - an additional green splashback kitchen tile option.

Satin Effect Pink Metro Wall Tiles

Satin or matte effect metro tiles are great for a less glossy or polished look but still in a classic subway tile format. They offer a slightly flatter finish but still with a little texture and natural edges. Pink metro wall tiles are ones that have come and gone through the years – some can be a little garish, but the Orkney Terracotta and Orkney Coral carry earthy red and pink tones with enough interest but more subtle than many pink metro tiles out on the market.

Natural Stone Kitchen Wall Tiles

Rounding up our guide for kitchen backsplash tile ideas, we couldn’t not give natural stone a mention! Whilst porcelain and ceramic are low porosity and very stain resistant and hardwearing, we understand some people love the look and authenticity of natural stone. Nearly all our natural stone tiles are suitable for walls with the correct installation and wall substrate, however for a kitchen wall splashback, we usually find smaller format works best. The Dijon brushed or Dijon tumbled 600x100 strips are a popular choice for their soft beige to grey tones, delicate fossil details and versatility with all colour schemes. These will need sealing and require cleaning with stone friendly products but offer such a beautiful and natural finished look to a kitchen!
