Internal Terracotta Cleaning & Maintenance
For everyday cleaning, sweeping or vacuuming with a soft brush attachment works well to remove dust and crumbs.
Terracotta tiles require regular maintenance, including sealing during installation and resealing every few years.
To clean them, use a pH-neutral cleaner and avoid harsh chemicals that can damage the tile's surface. Always check the manufacturers guidelines and test in a discreet area first.
Before sealing, make sure the tiles are thoroughly cleaned and free from dust. Light brushing or dusting may be necessary to prepare the surface. If the tiles show any marks, they can be cleaned with a mild, pH-neutral cleaner. We recommend using Lithofin MN Wash and Clean.
The products you use for sealing will depend on the method you choose –
Modern method: This approach provides long-lasting protection, making it particularly suitable for areas with heavy foot traffic. Begin by applying two undiluted coats of Lithofin TC Impregnator. Once fully dry, follow with two coats of Lithofin TC Sealant to complete the treatment.
Classic method: This technique brings out the natural warmth and rich character of terracotta, resulting in a higher sheen finish. However, it does require more frequent upkeep. Start by applying two undiluted coats of Lithofin TC Classic Primer. After the primer has dried completely, warm the Lithofin TC Classic Wax in a water bath, then apply two coats. Finish by polishing the surface using a polishing machine or a felt pad.

For a deep clean, we recommend using the Lithofin Power Clean. This is designed to remove more stubborn dirt.
To work out the correct ratio of product to water for your floor, we recommend testing the product on a tile in a discreet area with a ratio of 1:10.
Apply generously and leave the product on for 8-10 minutes - scrubbing every minute with a stiff brush.
Rinse several times with clear water and towel dry before assessing the results. If you are not satisfied, increase the ratio of product to water and test again, or speak with the technical team at Lithofin. We do not recommend using this product neat.
How often you need to reseal terracotta flooring depends on the level of foot traffic in each area. High-traffic spaces like hallways and entrances typically require resealing every 1–2 years due to increased wear. In contrast, areas with lighter use may only need resealing every 2–3 years.
