Donna’s Winchester White Renovation

Donna, her husband and two children, live in the beautiful Derbyshire countryside surrounded by green fields and farmland, not far from the residential village of Mickleover. ‘We really enjoy living here – I have lived here my whole life, as have my family, and it is great being close to so many amenities’.

Donna and her family had just finished renovating what they thought to be their forever home when they decided to start their third renovation. I asked Donna what made her choose this particular property and why she wanted to renovate again so soon after just completing another project. ‘When I was younger, I use to drive past this house a lot with my family and always wished that one day I could live there. So, when my husband and I saw this house up for sale in early 2020, we knew we had to make an offer – it was meant to be!’

Their new home, which was previously a 19th century rundown farmhouse, with low ceilings and many small rooms, has now been knocked down throughout. A new extension has been added to the side of the main house, creating an airy and spacious open-plan dining area.

‘Before the renovation, the property felt dark and dingy – the roof lanterns in the dining area have really helped keep the area bright, brining in lots of lovely sunshine!’ The original oak beams were also kept in the kitchen area, adding a historical charm and character, working perfectly alongside Donna’s traditional style.

When looking for a new flooring, it was important to Donna that it was easy to clean, very durable and low maintenance – especially when having two children and two dogs! ‘We really wanted our flooring to have the appearance of natural stone and to be warm toned, this is when we found the Winchester White porcelain. It works perfectly with the other colours in the house, we used All White from Farrow and Ball for the walls and Hardwick White for the kitchen units.’

Throughout the whole build everyone was in involved in the project Donna tells me, ‘We all enjoy being hands on and getting involved, even the boys, they absolutely love demolishing things! Myself and my husband did a lot of the painting and my sister helped me with the personal finishing touches’.

‘The property also came with two barns, one of which was converted and added onto the side of the house. The other, we are hoping to convert into an indoor pool area, which will follow through to the gym. The boys asked why we didn’t get round to doing this first!’

I hope all of you eager renovators have enjoyed this read and thank you to Donna for letting us visit your beautiful home – good luck with your future projects!
